The character established throughout this variety of pieces is a combination of how I see myself and who I wish to be.
Roxie, a female, sagittarius, blonde, kind of punk-cutie, artist-hippy extraordinaire, can be seen surrounded by skies of artists past, living her life as she pleases, not particularly following any rules, and “doin’ her own thing.”
This character’s physical appearance was inspired greatly by a character from a Netflix show called the Midnight Gospel. The body was created from the form of the character, Clancy, who actually is a man in the show, but never conforms to gender binaries, at least in appearance. (This was something that both Roxie and I appreciated.)
I added images of real eyes to the face and enhanced them, allowing the viewer to connect on a human level with Roxie further than just with the flatness of cartoon style blocks of color. I also adjusted the colors of the figure in order to establish important identifying features such as my blonde hair.
Throughout my process I started to use pictures of my own eyes to be Roxie’s eyes. This transformation allowed me to personally connect with my alter ego. I put characteristics of myself including passions and visual aesthetic similarities throughout Roxie such as a love for bucket hats and beanies, art and her stuffed pet lion.
But putting my own eyes onto this cartoon character, bringing it to life, gives me a space for visual reflection, looking into the windows to my own soul though colored pixels on a computer screen.
