This article discusses the founder of DeepAI, Kevin Baragona expressing concerns for the exponential progress of AI development. He states that AI will become smarter than us and that someone should stop the AI industry. These statements are harsh and sobering to hear from a creator of AI, honestly creating a scare and concern to the public. Despite signing an open letter urging developers to pause AI development, Bragona still believes that AI can benefit human creativity. As we’ve discussed in class, the opportunities to use AI for inspiration are immense as is recognized by Baragona. But he also explains that AI makes creativity “cheaper”, comparing AI to Google in its relation to knowledge to AI’s relation to creativity. The article also describes how Baragona is concerned that AI content will become impossible to tell what is “real” and “fake” content on the internet. This is an interesting aspect of the article because content itself is curated, and digital art such as digital sculpture has been playing with this concept of depicting objects that seem real but are digitally created. As a follow up of reading this article, I thought it would be interesting to ask AI itself what it thinks about this situation. I asked, “Do you think AI is going to be smarter than humans?” and ChatGPT responded with, “As an AI language model, I do not have personal beliefs or opinions. However, many experts believe that AI has the potential to become more capable than humans in specific tasks. However, it is important to note that AI is designed to perform specific tasks and lacks the general intelligence and adaptability of human beings. Additionally, there are ethical and societal considerations that need to be addressed as AI technology advances.”
